‘Çanakkale 1915' to bring epic battle to big screen

Quote:
25 March 2012 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A film adaptation of Turkish author Turgut Özakman's bestselling novel “Diriliş Çanakkale 1915” (Resurrection Gallipoli 1915) is set to hit cinema screens on Oct. 18 in what is being predicted to be a gripping dramatization of one of the great defining moments in the history of the Turkish people.
A co-production of the companies Fida Film and Örümcek Yapım, “Çanakkale 1915” is being directed by Yeşim Sezgin and produced by Murat Akdilek and Serkan Balbal.

According to a press release, shooting of the film will take place in Çanakkale, where the battle actually took place, and its surrounding area and is expected to begin in May and last for two months. The tale is one that author Özakman described as not being about bloodshed but about the brave revival of a nation's people.

As the clock ticks down to the commencement of the shooting, some 2,000 soldier costumes have been specially designed for the film and the preparation of hundreds of costumes for villagers and other characters nears completion.

Trenches extending hundreds of meters are being excavated for the battle scenes and a team of 500 supporting actors are receiving training for their roles as soldiers. A replica of the famous Turkish naval ship the Nusrat Minelayer, which played a heroic role in the battle by moving out to sea at night to pick up and redeploy loose mines, several of which sunk or crippled allied ships, will also feature in the film.

Special effects are to be used for mine explosions in the film, and the dramatization of the epic sea battle is set to be a complicated operation involving shooting of scenes from helicopters and underwater cameras.

The Battle of Gallipoli was fought on land and at sea at Gallipoli (Çanakkale in Turkish) during World War I. The British and French were trying to take control of İstanbul as well as the Turkish straits to secure access to Russia. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts and the campaign ended with heavy casualties on both sides.
