In dit hoofdstuk komt het verhaal van de opgraving tot de begrafenis. Ik hoop dat ik ook kan laten zien wat voor werk vooraf gaat tot aan de begrafenis.

In this thread I am putting the story from finding the soldier and finishing with the funeral. I will also try to show what work is involved before the soldier is laid to rest.

De soldaat is gevonden op 11.02.2006. Tot het weer goed was en de politie aanwezig kon zijn is het lichaam van de soldaat geborgen 25.02.2006.

The soldier was located 11.02.2006. Because of bad weather en the required presence of the police at the excavation, we removed the soldier on the 25.02.2006.

De foto's zijn van de schouderbadge en cap insignia. Al vrij snel werd bevestigd dat het ging om The kings "Liverpool" regiment. De cap badge
is gevonden waar een van de borst zakken zou hebben gezeten.

The photo's are of the shoulder badge and the cap badge. We quickly learned that it was a soldier who served with The Kings "Liverpool" Regiment. The cap badge was found where the breast pocked would have been.

Zondagavond heeft Simon Jones mij benaderd, een voormalig curator van The Kings Regiment museum in Liverpool. Ik heb met de informatie van Simon contact opgenomen met het museum in Liverpool en vandaag ontving ik al de volgende informatie.

Sunday night I was approached by Simon Jones a former curator of The Kings museum in Liverpool. With the information I received from Simon I approached The Kings museum and received today the following reply:-

Dear Frans,

Thank you very much indeed for contacting me.

I've had a quick look at the Regimental histories and it seems that there is a good chance that you have found a soldier of the 12 (Service) Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment). The 12th Btn took part in an attack on Langemarck on the morning of 16 August, 1917, taking, losing and retaking portions of the enemy line until the night of 17th-18th August, when they were relieved. So yes, please supply us with information about the exact position. I'd also be interested to know the positioning of the cap badge. By 1917, of course, he should have been wearing a steel helmet. It is quite possible, however, that he would have retained his cap badge in a pocket.

What is your opinion concerning the bombs? My first impression is that they are trench mortar ammunition. The regimental histories mentions that the conditions were so poor that most of the heavy equipment carried into the attack had to be abandoned.

I shall be putting your offer of high-resolution images to our next 'offers' meeting. In the meantime, I have informed the Regimental Secretary of the present day King's Regiment (Manchester and Liverpool), who has asked me to liaise with you on his behalf. The Regiment will almost certainly wish to provide a burial party in due course.

Vandaag heb ik ook kontakt opgenomen met de CWGC en er werd mij medegedeeld dat de soldaat zal worden overgedragen door de Belgiesche autoriteiten op 08.03.2006. Ik heb gevraagd of ik, of een van de medewerkers naar de kogels in de bullit-belt mag kijken voor datums op de kogels die een goed beeld v.w.b. de excacte datum kunnen geven.

I contacted the CWGC in Ieper today. They informed me that the soldier would be handed over by the Belgian authorities on the 8 th of march.
I have put in a request if I or one of the staff could look in the bullit belt and look for a production date on the bullits. This would help to pin point the excact date.

Twee foto's van items die gevonden zijn. Beide items zijn met de soldaat meegenomen en zullen uiteindelijk bij de CWGC terechtkomen en met de soldaat begraven worden. Het is met de gevonden voorwerpen dat de CWGC/MOD zal proberen om tot een identifikatie te komen.

Het is duidelijk niet de taak van De Diggers om hierover te speculeren.

Two photo's of personnal items that were found with the soldier. Both the items were removed with the soldier and will eventually be handed over with the remains to the CWGC. It is with the items found around the soldier that the CWGC/MOD will attempt an eventual identification.

It is clearly not our task to speculate over the identity of this soldier.
