Replica World War I trenches at Bodelwyddan Castle open to the public
The trench was created in memory of those who passed through Kinmel Park Army camp
Bodelwyddan Castle and Park held guided tours by educational historical interpreters to create the experience of life during and after the Great War.
The new trenches have been dug out alongside the remains of the original ones that were used by the army for training during the conflict, which lasted from 1914 to 1918.
Construction of Kinmel Park Army Camp began in 1914 and it was originally intended to house and train the new 38th Welsh Army Division, however over the course of the Great War, many regiments were stationed there, in addition to The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, conscientious objectors and nursing staff.
In 1917 the poet Robert Graves was put in command of the officer cadet battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers at Kinmel Camp after recovering from serious wounds on the Western Front, and he referred to the camp briefly in his autobiography “Goodbye to All That”.
