Medal for the Somme (Médaille de la Somme)1914-1918 and 1940
Circular bronze medal with laterally pierced ball suspension; the face with two warriors of antiquity facing right, their cloaks flowing behind, a javelin in their right hand, a shield in their left, that in the foreground bearing the French cockerel, that behind the British lion, a recumbent figure with a water jar above, symbolic of the River Somme, inscribed below ‘BATAILLES DE LA SOMME JUILLET-NOVEMBRE MCMXVI’ (Battles of the Somme, July-November 1916), signed ‘M. Delannoy’; the reverse inscribed ‘COMBATTANTS DE LA SOMME 1914-1918-1940’; with Paris Mint ‘corne d’abondance’ bronze assay mark on the edge; on possibly original correct ribbon. The medal was created by the Veterans Association ‘Ceux de la Somme’ to commemorate the part its members played in the battles of the Somme and especially the slaughter of 1916. Only those who could demonstrate their presence in conflict on the Somme in 1914-1918 were admitted to the association. Later, membership was extended to those who opposed the German invasion of 1940 on the Somme. A good example of a very strikingly-designed medal commemorating key battles of two World Wars.
